What is a vertical garden?
The term “vertical garden” is closely linked to so-called urban gardening – growing plants in the city where space is limited.
A vertical garden can be created both indoors and outdoors. The biggest difference compared to a traditional garden is that the plants are not planted in the ground as usual, but arranged in rows one above the other.
Above all, a vertical garden saves space, which makes it particularly interesting for gardening in flats and houses.
Vertical garden as a living wall
Especially in flats, allotments, on balconies or terraces, plants are often used as decorative or design features. A vertical garden lets you enhance entire walls, room dividers or façades with greenery.
A living wall doesn’t have to be completely overgrown. With our vertical garden sets, you can create striking, eye-catching features.
How do you create a vertical garden?
There are different ways to build a vertical garden or living wall. The JARDINION garden set offers a convenient way to set up a vertical garden. If you choose one of our sets, you save time and effort because everything you need for installation on your wall, balcony or façade is included (except for screws and wall plugs).
A quick note: when drilling and installing a vertical garden on an insulated façade, make sure you use suitable wall plugs. Otherwise you risk creating thermal bridges. In this case, it’s best to discuss your project with a qualified professional.
Where is the best place for a vertical garden?
Even lighting conditions are important in a vertical garden. Plants that are grown right next to a window will grow towards the window – towards the light. That’s why installing the living wall opposite a window is often the better solution. In general, sunny to partially shaded locations are ideal. A daylight lamp can also help provide more even illumination.
It’s also important to protect your living wall from water damage and dirt (when watering). Either install your planters with a waterproof (plastic) barrier between them and the wall, or paint the wall with a waterproof latex paint.
What should you consider for outdoor use?
A vertical garden outdoors – for example on a balcony or terrace – needs to be protected from frost on cold days.
On very hot days, you should also pay attention to when and how much you water. If you water your vertical garden at the wrong time, the leaves can burn quickly. And if you water too little, your plants can dry out fast.
Which potting soil or alternatives do you need for a vertical garden?
Which potting compost you can use in a vertical garden depends heavily on the plants you want to grow.
A good alternative to potting compost in your vertical garden is plant granules. They are available in different grain sizes and compositions – suitable for a wide range of plants. There are even suitable mixes for herbs and succulents.
The advantage of plant granules over potting compost is that mould doesn’t form. In the airy, porous granules, roots don’t usually rot. Another big plus for your vertical garden is that the typical pests found in potting compost don’t occur.
All you need is a watering indicator to ensure the water supply is right, so there’s no waterlogging and your plants don’t dry out from too little watering. This tip also applies when using normal potting compost.
Which plants are suitable for a vertical garden?
In a vertical garden, you have various options for designing your living wall or your fruit, vegetable or herb garden. If you want to green an entire wall, you’ll need climbing or trailing plants such as devil’s ivy, string of peas and climbing fig. Ferns also offer dense growth.
Various flowers and so-called succulents are also ideal for a vertical garden.
Which vegetables and fruit work well in a vertical garden?
If you’re growing a vertical garden for practical reasons, you can plant a range of herbs, vegetables or fruit. The following varieties are particularly suitable:
Vegetables & herbs:
- Leafy salads
- Radishes
- Garlic
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Dill
