What is an inspection hatch?

Inspection hatches, also known as access panels or maintenance hatches, are used to neatly cover installations such as fuse boxes or cable runs. They are fitted by cutting an opening in a solid wall or a drywall (plasterboard) wall/ceiling and allow quick access for servicing and inspection.

What different types of inspection hatch are available?

A distinction is made between inspection hatches with a plasterboard infill and classic steel inspection hatches. Inspection hatches with a plasterboard infill are designed to suit a 12 mm (approx. 0.47 in) plasterboard sheet.

Steel inspection hatches are used to cover smaller installations and are fitted into the plasterboard panel.

What materials are inspection hatches made from?

We offer two different models. One option is an inspection hatch made from white powder-coated steel, which is particularly suitable for smaller meters. The other model features a 12 mm (approx. 0.47 in) plasterboard infill and an aluminium frame.

What sizes are inspection hatches available in?

Because installations vary in size, our shop offers inspection hatches in a range of dimensions. Which one is right for you depends on the intended use. An inspection hatch measuring 20 x 20 cm (approx. 7.9 x 7.9 in) is ideal when you need access to small meters. With a 60 x 60 cm (approx. 23.6 x 23.6 in) inspection hatch, larger technical connections can also be concealed neatly.

What makes a high-quality inspection hatch?

A high-quality inspection hatch features a push-to-open latch. This makes the hatch easier to open and also improves safety.

In addition, models with a plasterboard infill have a safety retaining cable, which is especially helpful for ceiling installations. The cable prevents the plasterboard infill from falling when the hatch is opened and therefore reduces the risk of injury.

How do you install an inspection hatch?

Both models in our range can be installed in ceilings as well as walls. The model with the pre-fitted plasterboard panel, designed specifically for drywall construction, is inserted into the prepared opening in the ceiling or wall like a plasterboard sheet and screwed in place.

Alternatively, the access panel can also be fixed using CW profiles.

To install the white steel inspection door, an opening must be cut into the plasterboard. Then remove the door from its hinges, insert the inspection hatch frame into the opening and fasten it to the installed drywall profiles using drywall screws.

How are inspection hatches used for chimney cleaning?

Inspection hatches are often used for chimney cleaning, especially to remove soot deposits that can cause chimney fires. It is recommended to fit the cleaning opening in the lower section of the chimney, specifically below the stove connection.
