What is a Tile Leveling System?
A tile leveling system helps you lay tiles evenly. Depending on the system, you can use wedges or tension caps along with compatible threads or tension straps.
To achieve a clean result, it is essential that the tiles are laid on an already level surface, as the system does not compensate for unevenness or hollow spaces.
What Types of Tile Leveling Systems Are Available?
There are two types: ergonomic and wedge leveling systems. Essentially, both systems meet the same requirements but differ mainly in the head design and their application depending on tile thickness.
The wedge leveling system uses plastic wedges, as the name suggests. These ensure a flat surface when laying tiles.
The ergonomic system is innovative, as the screwable tension cap allows a view of the joint and tile below the rotating cap. This provides better control during leveling compared to other systems.
The suitable head variant depends on your tile thickness. The ergonomic system is ideal for tiles with a thickness of 3–15 mm, while the wedge leveling system is designed for tiles with a thickness of 1–12 mm.
How to Lay Tiles with the Leveling System
Assembly of the Ergonomic Tile Leveling System:
In this system, two threaded straps are inserted between the tile and adhesive bed on each tile side.
Next, the second tile is placed against the threaded straps. The tension cap is then placed and screwed tight to bring the tiles to the same height.
Finally, the tension cap and strap are detached from the tiles using a rubber mallet or a footstep.
Assembly of the Wedge Tile Leveling System:
This system requires an additional leveling plier, which is used to push the wedges through the tension straps. The process is similar to the ergonomic system. Here, the foot of the tension strap is placed under the tile, ensuring that it aligns with the opening over the tile.
The second tile is then aligned with the tension straps. The wedges are initially pushed through the tension straps by hand and further tightened using the leveling plier until the tiles form a flat surface at the edges. As with the ergonomic system, wedges and straps are removed in the final step using a rubber mallet or a footstep.
Is There a Difference Between Laying Floor and Wall Tiles with the Tile Leveling System?
The tile leveling system can be used on both floors and walls. The individual steps do not differ. However, it is important to start with tiling the wall first to avoid soiling your newly tiled floor, for instance, with tile adhesive.
