What is a chimney cover?
A chimney cover has many different functions. Many people use a chimney cover as a visual enhancement, but it also provides protection in heavy rain or snowfall.
In addition, the cover is particularly useful when downdraughts increase and significantly affect the chimney’s draught. This can have a negative impact on the combustion process and on the safe discharge of flue gases produced in the chimney. A chimney cover also helps protect against birds, which often use chimneys for nesting.
What material is the Zambelli chimney cover made from?
A Zambelli chimney cover is made from high-quality stainless steel with a material thickness of 0.8 mm (approx. 0.03 in). Pre-drilled holes in the hood make installation very easy using the supplied fixing materials.
What material should a chimney cover be made from?
There are various regulations for the material used for a chimney cover, which must be complied with. The material should be non-combustible and therefore heat-resistant. It should also comply with the applicable fire safety regulations and relevant standards.
Chimney covers made of wood or plastic are not suitable and must not be used. Stainless steel or copper chimney covers, on the other hand, are ideal for chimney protection: they are non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and resistant to UV radiation and weathering.
Who installs a chimney cover?
For safety reasons, a chimney cover should always be installed by a qualified professional. A chimney sweep or roofer is particularly suitable, as they are familiar with the requirements for a chimney cover. The cost for professional installation is between €50 and €100.
Can rainwater get into the chimney?
Without suitable protection, rainwater or snow can enter the chimney. A chimney cover is ideal for preventing this. However, if water does get into the chimney, it is important to distinguish whether it is a large or small amount.
Small amounts of water in the chimney can form as so-called condensate due to the combustion gases. If an above-average amount of condensate forms, this is usually due to an incorrectly sized system.
Which chimney cover size is suitable for my chimney?
The size of your chimney cover depends on the external dimensions of your chimney. You can find the right size for your chimney in the following table:
