What is meant by pigeon repellent?

How do I get rid of pigeons in the roof space?

There are several ways to prevent pigeons from settling permanently. This includes installing anti-pigeon spikes to make roofs, railings or window sills inaccessible to pigeons.

In general, it helps to create surfaces that are smooth or sloped at least 45 degrees, as birds cannot perch there. Alternatively, you can use fluttering tape, wind chimes or pinwheels, as the irregular movements disturb pigeons.

You can also hang reflective objects such as CDs or DVDs on a string to scare pigeons away. Acoustic deterrents are also possible – for example, small bells on a string – but these may annoy residents and neighbours.

Which pigeon deterrents are prohibited?

In general, any pigeon control measures that cause injury, poisoning or death are prohibited. This includes weapons, live traps or objects thrown at the animals. Instead, it is better to use the options mentioned above, such as anti-pigeon spikes. They deter pigeons without harming them.

What material are the spikes made from?

How are bird deterrent spikes installed?

Installing our spike systems is very straightforward. Using the pre-drilled holes, the spikes can be fixed in place with screws or nails. The number of rows depends on the area to be protected; our anti-pigeon spikes are available from two-row to five-row versions. It is important to clean the surface before installation so it is free from dust and grease.

What types of pigeon spikes are available?

Common pigeon spikes are metal spikes, usually mounted on a metal or plastic base strip. They are a popular choice thanks to their low cost and easy installation. Used on ledges, window sills, gutters and other surfaces, they provide effective bird control.

Additional protective measures may be necessary if the areas were previously used for nesting and roosting, as nests can reduce the protective effect or even help pigeons settle in.

Pigeon deterrent spikes are generally available as sharpened metal spikes, blunt-tipped metal spikes and plastic spikes.

Metal spikes with sharpened tips are not animal-welfare friendly, as they can cause injuries to pigeons and other birds – and also to people.

By contrast, the most commonly used option is blunt-tipped metal spikes, which do not pose a risk of injury to animals or humans.

Finally, there are plastic spikes, also with blunt tips. They are harmless for pigeons and other birds, but their durability is significantly lower than blunt-tipped metal spikes.
