What is a ridge roll?
A ridge roll is fitted at the highest point of a roof, known as the ridge. It protects the ridge area from driving rain or snow while providing reliable ventilation beneath the roof covering. Ridge rolls are also referred to as ridge tapes.
What material is a ridge roll made from?
A ridge roll can be made from either copper or aluminium. Aluminium is a high-quality material that is UV-resistant, weather-resistant and waterproof, helping to keep the loft space dry. A copper ridge roll also offers resistance to moss and lichen.
How much does a ridge roll cost?
The price per roll varies depending on the length and material. Copper ridge rolls are usually a little more expensive, as they offer an additional benefit compared with aluminium thanks to their resistance to moss and lichen.
How is a ridge roll fixed in place?
A ridge roll consists of three parts: a centre section, two edge sections and two adhesive strips. The centre section is responsible for the ridge roll’s function. It allows moisture from inside the roof to escape to the outside while preventing water from entering from the outside. This ventilation function helps to prevent mould from forming.
First, align the ridge roll centrally along the ridge and roll it out. Then secure it with a stapler. Next, remove the protective film from the adhesive strips, pull the ridge roll tight, and press it firmly onto the high points of the tile profile so it bonds properly.
The stretch zone is important: it must be bonded to the roof tiles so that no voids remain. Finally, fit and fix the ridge tiles.
Is a ridge roll waterproof?
Yes, a ridge roll is waterproof. It prevents water in the form of rain or snow from entering the roof structure. At the same time, the material ensures ventilation so that moisture forming inside the roof can escape, helping to prevent mould.
How wide does the ridge roll need to be?
As a rule, ridge rolls are available in a length of 5 m (approx. 16.4 ft). There are more variations in width, as the required width depends, for example, on the roof construction.
Typically, ridge rolls are available in widths from 300 to 390 mm (approx. 11.8 to 15.4 in). For installing on clay and concrete roof tiles with a standard profile, a ridge roll width of 310 mm (approx. 12.2 in) is suitable. Strongly profiled hips and ridge formations, as well as coverings with deeper profiles, are installed using ridge rolls with widths of 350 mm and 390 mm (approx. 13.8 in and 15.4 in).
