What are roof shingles?
Roof shingles are a cost-effective option used for covering the roofs of garden sheds, carports, birdhouses and sauna barrels, among other applications.
What are roof shingles made of?
Our bitumen shingles consist of a fibreglass mat core that is impregnated with bitumen on both sides, plus a top layer of coloured mineral granules. The shingles have a material thickness of 2.8 mm (approx. 0.11 in), which supports a long service life.
What makes a high-quality roof shingle?
High-quality roof shingles are flexible and easy to bend, making them straightforward to install. Bitumen shingles should also offer strong UV resistance and weather protection. In our shop you’ll find shingles that are weatherproof and provide reliable protection against sun, rain and wind.
Are bitumen shingles waterproof?
Yes, our bitumen shingles are waterproof. The mineral granule coating on the top surface helps prevent water from penetrating due to rain or snow.
What types of roof shingles are available?
There are three main shapes: rectangular roof shingles, beaver-tail shingles, and hexagonal shingles. Depending on the application, a different shape may be recommended.
For steep roofs, rounded shingles are a good choice as they closely resemble beaver-tail tiles. If you want to cover the roof of a garden shed, rectangular roof shingles are often the better option and are also more economical, as they typically require less material than beaver-tail shingles.
How are roof shingles installed?
For a professional installation, it’s recommended to first lay the appropriate roof flashing on the roof. The bitumen shingles can then be installed row by row, starting at the eaves and working up to the ridge.
For extra stability, the bitumen shingles can also be fixed with roofing felt nails, which you’ll also find in our range. These are driven in perpendicular to the roof surface and ensure the shingles adhere firmly to the roof. Generally, stapling shingles is not recommended.
How long do bitumen roof shingles last?
When installed correctly, roof shingles can achieve a minimum service life of up to 25 years. With regular roof maintenance, this can be extended.
